Bathers sunbathing in Cala MontgóCala Montgó has once again been awarded the Blue Flag for the thirteenth consecutive year, which certifies the good environmental quality of the beach and the excellence of its services.

Across the country, 95 beaches have been recognized with the Blue Flag, 28 of which are on the Costa Brava. This means just over 18 kilometers of beaches.

An award with international recognition

The blue flags are awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education , which analyzes and evaluates the environmental management of the beaches, the safety of the bathing areas, the provision of services and the information provided. Also the quality of the water, which must be excellent to obtain the recognition. This judgment is made by a group of 69 people representing the different public administrations, environmental foundations and experts in the field. These awards are valued internationally and are recognized in about forty countries around the world.

The port of L’Estartit also has a blue flag

In the case of Torroella de Montgrí, Cala Montgó first achieved recognition in 2008 and has maintained it uninterruptedly since 2010. As for marinas, 24 Catalan ports have been certified with a blue flag, one of which is that of l’Estartit. Spain is the world leader in blue flags in the world, with a total of 729, followed by Greece and Turkey.

Committed to quality tourism and sustainability

The councilor for Coastal Management, Marc Calvet, stated that the distinction is „a recognition“ of the work towards sustainability „that has been going on in the municipality for years“ while the councilor for Tourism, Dúnia Oliveras , valued that awards like this certify the municipality’s commitment to placing itself „on the map of quality tourism.“
