Presentation of the Green Destinations Golden AwardsThe Tourist Destination Torroella de Montgrí -l’Estartit – Illes Medes has received the ‚ Golden Award ‚ from Green Destinations at an event held in Berlin . This certificate accredits the municipality’s sustainability policies and promotes sustainable tourist destinations internationally according to a series of environmental, socio-economic and cultural criteria.

Last January, Green Destinations announced that the municipality had successfully passed the Golden Award audit, which contains a hundred sustainability criteria and indicators. Inspectors from the organization evaluated them ‚on site‘ following the international standards dictated by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). These are indicators in the field of nature conservation, heritage, waste management, energy supplies, or the state of tourism resources, among others. The award is a recognition of the destination’s efforts to maintain the attractiveness of its tourism in the future. Not only are visible and tangible aspects measured, such as natural heritage, but also policies and management plans that take into account the principles of sustainable development. The Marketing Director of the Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board , Víctor Goita , collected the award on behalf of the Torroella de Montgrí City Council at an event held this Wednesday within the framework of the International Tourism Fair – ITB in Berlin, where several awards and recognitions were given. Since 2019, Torroella de Montgrí i l’Estartit has been included in the ‚Top 100 Destinations Sustainability Stories‘ competition and has also had the ‚Golden Award‘ since 2019.
