The Tourist Office of l’Estartit has passed the audit to be included in the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism, successfully exceeding its different indicators. Coinciding with the Natural Park Week and the CETS Forum, which will be held on May 23 in Pals, it will receive the certificate that officially accredits it. Last February, a verification visit evaluated the different spaces of the Tourist Office of l’Estartit to check if it met the requirements to be a CETS member. The visit confirmed that the equipment breathes natural park with vinyls of park landscapes, spaces and specific information about the area and a totem with the map and information of the natural space. In addition, the staff who serve visitors has specific training to disseminate the values of the park. Regarding the environment, the visit confirmed that mechanisms are established to control waste, water and energy consumption, such as recycling bins or a filtered water source, among others.
Beyond the current compliance with the requirements to be a CETS member, the Tourist Office has also presented a roadmap for the coming years to improve its offer and connection with the natural space, and to support local development and heritage conservation. Among the measures are the organization of activities to publicize the values of the park in cooperation with other municipalities, promote sustainable mobility through bike lanes or organize professional meetings on different aspects in collaboration with other tourist offices in the park area, among other actions.
The European Charter for Sustainable Tourism is an initiative of Europarc, an organization that brings together Protected Natural Areas from 38 European countries. EUROPARC is the managing entity that grants membership to the CETS to protected areas, in which it verifies that there is a commitment to applying the principles of sustainable tourism. The CETS guides the management of protected natural areas and tourism companies to define their development strategies in a joint and participatory manner. The Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter National Park has been a CETS member since 2016 and has 36 companies and organizations accredited with the seal. This is granted for a period of three years, renewable if the corresponding audits are passed.
