The Sant Andreu Fair in Torroella de Montgrí reaches its 629th edition with around sixty activities

On November 25th and 26th, the municipality dresses up to celebrate one of the oldest Agricultural, Livestock and Commercial Fairs in Catalonia with a commercial exhibition, equestrian exhibitions, a driving dog championship, a farm animal exhibition, theatrical visits, popular culture and family activities among others.

As every year, the Fair has chosen a common theme that will link the guided tours within the framework of the Fair in the Record. This year it is the care of farm animals. This activity can be done freely from 11 to 14 h and from 17 to 20 h and there will be guided tours on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 at 12 h and 18 h at a price of 3 euros. The start of the tour, as usual, leaves from the Museum of the Mediterranean.

The epicenter of the Fair, around the Espai Ter

Agricultural machinery exhibitionThe big weekend in Torroella will start on Saturday 25th at 10 am with the opening of the trade fair, which will be located in the Espai Ter , with the space next to the equipment intended for the little ones in the house with a multitude of games, workshops and entertainment. This is the epicenter of the fair, around which a whole series of exhibition spaces and areas are organized. Outside the Espai Ter, stalls will be distributed between the Passeig de Catalunya, which will host the Sant Andreu Market and the New and Used Vehicles Exhibition; and the Passeig Vicenç Bou, where the artisans’ fair and the agricultural machinery exhibition will be held. The official inauguration of the fair will take place on Saturday 25th at 11 am in an institutional event outside the Espai Ter.

Santi Serra, protagonist of the Horse Festival

Horse lovers will be able to enjoy a wide variety of equestrian shows and exhibitions throughout the weekend, such as a demonstration of hitching and a carousel exhibition by the Mas Paguina Equestrian Centre and the Equus Equestrian Club. There will also be space for a pony ride and to climb aboard a carriage. Around the equestrian area there will also be a display of purebred horses. The most anticipated show of the Horse Festival will once again be the dressage exhibition and free-roaming horse show by Santi Serra. Both Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 at 6 p.m.

The championship of champions remains alongside Espai Ter

Dog Racing ChampionshipOne of the most anticipated events is, without a doubt, the Atura Dog Competition, which every year brings together a very large audience from all over Catalonia. The Competition will be located in the parking lot next to Espai Ter, Sunday 26 at 10:30 a.m. Shepherds from Catalonia, the Basque Country, the Balearic Islands, the Valencian Country and Extremadura will participate. Specifically Jon Olibares with Bizi, Gaizka Etxaniz with Laster, Moisès Tarrés with Mel, Juli Bayot García with Tuca, Miquel Sastre with Tronc, Miquel Adrover with Bosquet and Jara Clemente Alpha. Judge Gillian Howell will be the judge again and master of ceremonies Raül Muixach. Last year the prize was taken by the Basque Gaizka Etxaniz, with a very competitive competition.

The livestock side of the fair will once again be dominated by farm animals in various enclosures and corrals spread out outside the Espai Ter. There will be two Fleckvieh cows, a Waygu cow and calf, 2 Friesian calves, 4 pigs, several sheep and lambs, rabbits, chickens, Mandarin ducks and Malayan hens. The Sant Andreu Fair is also the chosen setting for the Girona Provincial Championship of Breed Pigeons, which will take place at Carrer del Roser nº 1, changing location compared to last year. The exhibition can be visited from 10 am to 8 pm and the awards ceremony will take place on Sunday at 12 pm.

Activities for all audiences

During the weekend, many activities of all kinds have been scheduled, with the aim of ensuring that everyone, young and old, has their space. There is a Petanque Tournament on Saturday 25th at 10 am at the John Lennon Gardens run by the Torroella de Montgrí Petanque Club; a bird feeder tournament on Sunday 26th at 10 am; an outing to discover the Ribera forest on Sunday 26th at 10 am; and a concert by the Móndeveus and Anselm Viola choirs on Sunday 26th at 6 pm at the Sant Genís church. In terms of family activities, a Play Space for early childhood has been scheduled from 10 am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 7 pm on both Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 outside the Espai Ter, led by Tell Fusta, and an activity entitled ‘Active Family’ where children will work on balance, agility and orientation in the Montgrí Massif. This will be on Saturday 25 at 10 am. On Sunday 26, from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm and from 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm, the Labyrinth II activity has been scheduled in the outdoor area of ​​the Espai Ter. As for cinema, in addition to the usual programming at the Cine Montgrí, the documentary ‘The Rice War’ will be screened on Saturday 25 at 7 pm.

Parades and popular culture

Popular culturePopular culture will also have a prominent space at the Sant Andreu Fair with the Drac parade on Saturday 25th at 7 pm starting at the Passeig de l’Església and the parade through the streets of the Town on Sunday 26th at 12 pm also starting at the Passeig de l’Església. The Giants of Sant Feliu de Guíxols will participate as guests. The entities will have their space in the Plaça de la Vila, with the Mostra d’Entitats of the municipality both Saturday and Sunday.

Parallel events and the Pomatec technical meeting

Although the fair officially begins on Saturday 25, there are several events that are taking place over the weekend. One of them is Pomatec , the technical-economic meeting of the apple sector that is in its 23rd edition. It will be held at the Montgrí Cinema on Friday, 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a reference day for the fruit sector organized by the Torroella de Montgrí i Afrucat City Council. It is that time of year when the apple sector stops and analyzes where it is and how it is progressing, and if it is doing so at a good pace with other variables, such as consumption, price, export and the rest of production. In the professional field, on Saturday 25 at 10 a.m. the meeting ‘Let’s digitize the primary sector’ has been organized. This is a meeting aimed at professionals in the agricultural and livestock sector who want to know how they can improve the management and control of their business through digital tools. It is organized by the Girona Provincial Council and the Baix Empordà Regional Council. On Friday 24th the exhibition ‘The wisdom of women in the farm. From grandmothers to granddaughters’ will be inaugurated. By the Association of Farms of Torroella de Montgrí and L’Estartit. It will be at 8pm in the Chapel of Sant Antoni. In parallel with the fair, but in this case on Saturday 25th, coinciding with the International Day against Violence against Women, the manifesto will be read at 12pm in the Plaça de la Vila.

The prize is a batch of ‘És del Montgrí’ products valued at 150 euros. They are food products from the municipality and the area of ​​the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park. The Sant Andreu Fair is an unbeatable opportunity to get to know Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit and complement the visit with an overnight stay in one of the establishments in the municipality, meals in its bars and restaurants or one of the numerous activities offered by the tourist destination Torroella de Montgrí – l’Estartit – Medes Islands. In this sense, the City Council provides a list with all the establishments open for the Fair.
