The Tourism Sustainability Plan for Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit is entering its final stretch with practically all actions completed. With a budget of 3.6 million euros, it consists of 29 projects and actions grouped into 16 action programs and 6 areas that have had an impact on urban improvement, infrastructure, services, natural spaces and communication.
The first of the six areas is the Improvement of the Tourist Offer, where three areas have been affected: The quality of the beaches and bathing areas, the improvement of the urban landscape and the improvement of accessibility. On the beaches, equipment and services have been unified, the lifeguard towers have been changed and a strategic plan has been drawn up. The improvement of access to the sea between the Passeig del Molinet and the Espigó de Llevant is pending, which is being processed pending a report from the General Directorate of Coasts of the Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Spanish Government. In the urban planning field, a network of bike lanes has been built in L’Estartit, the Parc de la Pineda and the Plaça Jacques Costeau have been remodeled and three new squares have been created in the Griells urbanization and a study of the urban quality of the commercial areas of Torroella de Montgrí and L’Estartit has been carried out which has allowed several elements of urban furniture such as planters and flower beds to be changed. Regarding the improvement of accessibility throughout 2023, audits were carried out in 33 selected establishments to see their degree of accessibility and a series of reports have been generated that suggest improvement actions.
The second area is sustainability. In sustainable mobility, a welcome area with deterrent parking has been built in L’Estartit and three electric vehicle charging points have been installed in the municipality. Access to La Caminassa, which will provide access to a deterrent parking lot that will be implemented by the natural park, needs to be adapted. This project is currently on public display. It has been awarded and the improvement of the network of cycle paths and itineraries in the natural park needs to be implemented. In terms of promoting recycling, the container islands on the Passeig Marítim de L’Estartit have been closed and environmental awareness and education material has been generated.
The third area, with all actions completed, is that of Valorization of the Territory. In Torroella de Montgrí, the signage of points of heritage, historical and tourist interest has been changed and in L’Estartit a route has been created that values the natural and fishing heritage and which has a series of pedagogical resources aimed at schoolchildren with the ‘mascots’ Estar and Tit as protagonists. Also in L’Estartit, a management plan has been drawn up for the Espai Medes. It will be, when it opens to the public, the interpretation space of the natural park in the maritime area.
The fourth area of action in the Tourism Sustainability Plan is visitor care. In this area, the Torroella-Estartit-Illes Medes Destination has joined the state ‘Smart Destinations’ program and has created a co-working space in L’Estartit. The rehabilitation of the Can Castells building in Torroella de Montgrí is in progress, which will house the Torroella de Montgrí tourism office and various municipal offices.
The actions of the fifth area are well advanced and will be completed throughout 2024. It is the area of product, marketing and promotion in the area of the Tourist Destination and the natural park, in collaboration, in this case, with the rest of the municipalities that are part of it. In this area of actions, a graphic style book has been made for the two areas, the Tourism website is being remodeled and a new website is being created for the promotion of the natural park that will soon see the light of day and an entire project will be carried out to reinforce the tourist destination and the natural park online. It is an area basically intended for communication and marketing.
Finally, the sixth point is that of Business and Citizen Participation which has allowed, through a participatory process, to create a Strategic Tourism Plan and governance model, which will be presented this coming Tuesday, February 20, at a public event in L’Estartit.
