Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit have been accredited as members of the Intelligent Tourist Destination (DTI) program after being evaluated with the methodology of the State Society for the Management of Innovation and Tourism Technologies ( SEGITTUR ). An organization that depends on the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism of the Spanish Government.
The DTI model is endorsed by international bodies such as the World Tourism Organization , the Inter-American Development Bank , the OECD , the European Commission and the World Travel and Tourist Council (WTTC). It is based on five pillars and more than 200 requirements. The pillars are: governance, innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility.
Of the five axes analyzed, accessibility is where Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit have obtained the best results. Especially in the area of management and implementation of this issue in the destination. The municipality has accessible transport and information and encourages accessibility within the tourism sector. Along with accessibility, another axis where Torroella and l’Estartit stand out is that of technology with infrastructures and connectivity applied to the governance and intelligent management of the destination. Sustainability is the third of the areas where Torroella and l’Estartit have achieved a better score thanks to the effort made to conserve and recover the environment, preserve heritage, promote the circular economy and manage tourism sustainability.
Beyond evaluating 200 requirements in five areas, entry into the DTI involves the adoption of a roadmap with a series of recommendations. For example, it is suggested to work on innovative management and governance and promote innovation in the municipality. In this sense, the SEGITTUR report values the efforts made in transparency and participation , but sees room for improvement in the strategic vision. In order to be considered a smart tourist destination, Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit must monitor tourist activity to achieve greater knowledge of demand, promote smart signage , launch an urban mobility plan or create an accessibility management body.
The Mayor of Torroella de Montgrí, Jordi Colomí, congratulated himself on joining the DTI network, indicating that “it places us among the most innovative tourist destinations”. In this sense, he challenged himself to “continue working to attract new opportunities and meet the expectations generated by new trends both in terms of promotion and attracting new markets”. For Colomí, this membership must be taken advantage of to make “improvements in internal management, sustainability policies and in increasingly relevant and essential aspects such as accessibility”.
