The Tourist Destination Torroella de Montgrí -l’Estartit – Illes Medes maintains the ‘ Golden Award ‘ of Green Destinations which certifies and promotes sustainable tourist destinations internationally according to environmental, socio-economic and cultural criteria. The municipality has successfully passed an audit that recognizes its sustainability policy and good practices regarding the indicators of the Green Destinations program.
To obtain this ‘Golden Award’ the municipality had to overcome a hundred sustainability criteria and indicators that Green Destinations inspectors have evaluated ‘in situ’ following the international standards dictated by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) . Indicators in the field of nature conservation, heritage, waste management, energy supplies, or the state of tourism resources among others.

The award is also a recognition of the destination’s efforts to maintain the attractiveness of its tourism in the future. Not only are visible and tangible aspects, such as natural heritage, measured, but also policies and management plans that take into account the principles of sustainable development. Since 2019, Torroella de Montgrí i l’Estartit has been included in the ‘ Top 100 Destinations Sustainability Stories ‘ competition and has also had the ‘Golden Award’ since 2019. The councilor for tourism, Dúnia Oliveras , has assured that having this certificate that accredits sustainable tourism “contributes to the international projection of the destination and encourages us to continue to join efforts from the public and private spheres to advance sustainability policies”. Oliveras recalled that sustainability is one of the priorities of municipal management and that awards such as the ‘Golden Award’ certify “that we are on the right track”.
Green Destinations is an organization that promotes responsible management of tourist destinations and encourages the sector to implement good environmental practices. Every 2-3 years, destinations that are part of the organization must pass independent external audits to certify that they maintain good practices. Green Destinations has more than 120 member destinations from 25 different countries.
