Life on the beach

L'Estartit

In addition to its beautiful sand and water, the beach is a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life. Some plants, birds, and invertebrates thrive near the water, having adapted to the harsh conditions of dry, hot, and salty environments.

Underwater, fish and invertebrates live in the sand and water. Some, like soles, flounders, and other species, use camouflage and bury themselves in the sand to hide from predators.

Where the waves stir up the bottom, you can find sea bass, bream, and flounder swimming near the shore. At the bottom of the sea, striped sea bream can be seen scratching the sand to feed on invertebrates. Seagrass, an underwater plant, grows in deeper waters, contributing to the rich biodiversity of the coastal ecosystem.

If you’re interested in fishing, rod fishing is allowed from the beach, but a fishing licence is required, and it’s important to adhere to regulated fishing times and minimum fish sizes.

To further promote sustainable practices, artisanal fishermen in L’Estartit have started a responsible fishing project to protect the environment and ensure the preservation of marine life.

In summer, some ‘sepieras’ are placed by the beach where cuttlefish breed. If you swim in the area with goggles and a snorkel, you may be able to see these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat.

L’Estartit’s beach is not only a place for relaxation but also an important ecosystem that must be protected for future generations.
