The Tavern Culture of L’Estartit
Taverns were the social gathering places for fishermen and residents when they could not go out to sea. These establishments provided a space where people would drink, eat, play cards, sing habaneras, and play the guitar, creating a lively and communal atmosphere.
Some well-known taverns in L’Estartit included Marcelino’s tavern, Ca la Gumersilda, and the Café of the Republicans. Many of these venues followed a traditional structure, with the tavern and a shop located downstairs, while the café operated upstairs, as was the case with Mamet’s Café.
These taverns were more than just places to pass the time—they were centres of community life, where stories were shared, traditions were preserved, and the deep connection between the people and the sea was celebrated.
