The natural beaches

L'Estartit

In L’Estartit, we are fortunate to still have natural beaches, which offer a stunning landscape and provide a habitat for unique species of flora and fauna. The dunes play a crucial role in protecting the beach from the effects of climate change and winter storms.

To help preserve the dunes, reed barriers are placed in winter to retain the sand and reduce erosion. During the summer months, ropes and stakes are set up to protect the natural dunes from human disturbance.

The dunes are home to species that can only be found in this environment, such as the chamanegre corriol, a bird that nests in the sand and is currently endangered. It is important to respect these protected areas by avoiding walking on the dunes and staying within designated paths.

In addition to the corriol, the natural beaches host other special bird species, including the herring hawk, cogullada, and the black-backed corriol, which nests between April and June.

The sea lily, a plant that thrives in the harsh conditions of the beach, is another characteristic species that tolerates the intense sun and drought of the summer months.

These natural beaches are not only a breathtaking part of L’Estartit’s landscape but also an essential habitat for protected species, making their preservation crucial for the region’s biodiversity.
