The Ter Vell

L'Estartit

The Old Ter or Ter Vell was once the old mouth of the River Ter before it was redirected into the current Gola. The water in this area comes from rainfall and irrigation runoff from the surrounding agricultural fields, creating a unique and dynamic ecosystem.

This wetland exists in a fragile balance with the urbanized land that surrounds it. The area is rich in wetland vegetation and freshwater lagoons, which provide a thriving habitat for a diverse range of aquatic animals.

At the Ter Vell Observatory, visitors can use binoculars to observe a wide variety of bird species, including ducks, coots, grebes, swallows, and the elusive bittern. The area is also home to other fascinating aquatic creatures, such as the otter and the brook turtle.

The Ter Vell wetlands serve as an important refuge for wildlife, showcasing the importance of preserving natural ecosystems amidst growing urbanisation.
