Popular culture, live music and family activities will star in a major festival in Torroella de Montgrí with activities for all ages. From August 17 to 27 the Sant Genís Festival will fill the town with concerts, dances, family shows, theatre, parades and correfoc. he traditional presentation of the Book of the Festa Major , last Saturday, was the preview of some events that will have their official starting shot on Saturday 17 August with the correfoc . This will take place at 10.30pm in the Plaça de la Vila. This is one of the most traditional and anticipated events of the festival and will be performed by the Ducs del Foc with the accompaniment of Les Gàrgoles de Banyoles and the Pim Pam Pum d’Olot . Later, on the Passeig de l’Església, there will be DJs with the spectacular Cavall de Troia, one of the novelties of this edition. The next day, at 8.30pm, there will be the children’s version of the correfoc, also starting in the Plaça de la Vila, by the Ducs del Foc and the Mussolets.
The Montgrí Medals are the most important institutional moment of the Festa Major and recognize outstanding personalities and associations in Torroella life. This year they will be awarded to the athlete Judith Corominas i Serrat, for being a pioneer in the world of football, paving the way for generations to come; to the industrial engineer and passionate communicator Jaume Bassa i Pasqual , for having rescued and portrayed a good part of the history of Torroella; and to the Escola de Futbol Baix Ter , on its 26th anniversary. The Montgrí Medals will be awarded on Saturday, August 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Espai Ter.
The proclamation is the other major element that makes the Festa Major official. This year, on the 35th anniversary of the twinning with Torrelles de La Salanca , it will be the mayor of this northern Catalan town, Marc Medina , who will be the star of the event with the welcome and accompaniment of the traditional music group Els Salancaires . It will take place on Saturday 24 August, at the start of the popular dinner to be followed by the habanera concert with the group Oreig de Mar. The dinner, organised by the Rugby Club Senglars , costs €20 for adults and €15 for children under ten, with tickets that can be purchased at Casa Pastors, Espai Ter, the L’Estartit Tourist Office or online, until 20 August. Afterwards, the Penya Barcelonista Montgrí i Comarca will serve the traditional Cremat that they make every year.
Popular Culture, linked to the giants, has a prominent place in the Sant Genís Festival. Saturday, August 24th at 11am in the Plaça de la Vila there will be the Parade and Dance of Giants and Bigheads, as a prelude to the Explosive Vermut
which will take place at the Convent of the Augustins, and at 5:30 p.m. the children will be able to dress and prepare the Giants on the Passeig de l’Església, to be well dressed for the next day’s patron saint’s day. The next day, Sunday 25 August, at 10:15 a.m.
The Giants will be planted in the Plaça de la Vila and at 10.30am they will go out in a parade accompanied by the Grallers del Montgrí , the Xatis , the Xanquers and the Gegants de Pineda de Mar as a guest group. Then, at 12pm, the Sant Genís Church will celebrate the traditional solemn mass and the Ball de l’Àliga. Then, at 1pm, the Àliga will dance again in the Plaça de la Vila with the Gegants and the Capgrossos.
As every year, the sardanas have an important presence at the Festa Major. Last Saturday there was a dance at 7:30 pm in the Plaça de la Vila with the Cobla La Principal de Cassà , hosted by the Festa Major Book Association. On Sunday, August 25, the day of Sant Genís, at 1:30 pm the traditional three sardanas will be danced.

In the afternoon, at 5:30 p.m., there will be the unmissable Sardana Audition with the Cobla-Orquestra Els Montgrins and the Cobla Foment del Montgrí. On Monday 26 August, at 6pm, in the Plaça de la Vila, the Cobla Baix Empordà will be the star of the last sardana audition of the Festa Major. The orchestras in the John Lennon Gardens are always one of the images of the Festa Major de Sant Genís. On Sunday 25 August, the day of the Patron Saint of Torroella, the Montgrins will give an afternoon concert at 7.30pm and the Night Ball at 10.30pm. The following day, Monday 26 August, with the same times, the Nova Blanes Orquestra will perform with a Festa Major concert and night ball. Both days with chair rental provided by the EF Baix Ter.
Barraques and the Torroella de Montgrí Youth Association will put a youthful accent on the Festa Major. Barraques’ schedule will start on Thursday, August 22 and will last until Monday, August 26 with concerts at midnight. The line-up includes Spanish pop-rock versions by Removida and the fusion of urban and pop music by Pol Bordas ; the tribute to Lax’n’Busto by Rock’n’Busto and the rock of Dan Peralbo and El Comboi ; the pop with character of Classe B and the ska of the all-female band Les Testarudes ; the versions by The Covers Band and the fusion of rap and urban music by Tribade and the fresh indie of Fall’n and the electronic rock of Seriall Killerz. Barraques will also have its family section on Monday, August 26 with Els Xetats at 7:30 p.m. Every day of Barrraques from 7:30 p.m. local entities serve dinners. In addition, for those who are already in the mood for an afternoon party, the Torroella Youth Association has scheduled previews of the barraques at the Espai Jove from Thursday, August 22 to Sunday, August 25, sessions on Thursdays from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the Convent of the Clarisses.
Dj Patter and Makina Pura will play; Screw + Ota Brown ; Dj Granota , Dj Gripaw and Dj Kapgroz ; and a night of Tramuska .
Another highly anticipated event will be the celebration of La Nocturna , which will take place on Monday, August 26, starting at 10 p.m. This festive procession, organized by the Grallers del Montgrí, will begin on October 1, 2017, and will pass through several streets in the town.
Sport will also be part of the big week in Torroella with various activities. The first will be on Friday 16 at 4 pm, at the Municipal Sports Hall with the 42nd Table Tennis Tournament , which will continue on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 at 8:30 am. On Saturday 17 at 9 am the Petanque Tournament begins at the John Lennon Gardens and at 4 pm there will be the 6th Active Chess Tournament , at the Convent of Les Clarisses. Football will take over the sporting duties on Friday 23 August at 9 pm with the Festa Major match between UE Torroella and CF Bellcaire and on Saturday 24 August at 6 pm with the

In L’Estartit, in the Parc de la Pineda, the Roundnet Sports Club has organized the first tournament at 3pm on Saturday, August 24th.
Circus and clown lovers will enjoy two activities at the Sant Genís Festival that will delight the public in this genre. The first, Thursday, August 22 at 6pm in Plaça dels Dolors with Kasumay , from the Los Circus Company ; and the second Friday, August 23, at 6 p.m. in Plaça de la Vila with the gesture and clown show by the master Carlo Mô , Yougur. Before these dates, on Friday August 16, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the Plaça de la Vila will host an outdoor Escape Room organized by Racó de Rialles. It should be noted that, as usual, on Saturday August 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the
World Empordà Market in Plaça Mestre Pere Rigau.
Finally, and as is traditional, the Espai Ter will host the Teatre de Festa Major, Tuesday 27 August at 8.30pm, with the play ‘Les Mares’, written, directed and performed by Fel Faixedas and Carles Xuriguera . Tickets cost €20 and can be purchased online or at Casa Pastors, the L’Estartit Tourist Office and Espai Ter.
The poster for the Festa Major is the winner of the popular vote promoted with the poster competition expressly called in a new edition to give an image to this year’s Sant Genís, and is the work of Martina Sarasa Caballero , who has perfectly illustrated the main elements of the festival coming out from balconies. All the works presented will be exhibited at the Pere Blasi Library from Friday 16 August until 15 September. The opening of the exhibition will be at 3pm.
The councilor for Culture and Festivities Anna Company thanked “the collaboration of all the entities that make it possible to have a participatory and lively festival” and highlighted that “it is an event that unites the population and offers a unique opportunity for friends, family and neighbors to meet again”. The councilor responsible for the Festival has asked to enjoy the festival with joy and civility.
