Nature tourism and ecotourism teachers from different parts of the world visited Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit yesterday with the aim of learning first-hand about their territorial and tourist development model.
The visit is part of a meeting that the Faculty of Tourism of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) is currently organizing, with several universities that participate in the Erasmus program.
Among other places, the delegation visited the reclaimed wetlands of La Pletera , where they were received by the mayor, Jordi Colomí , who welcomed them to the municipality and explained in detail the process followed to recover this natural space, one of the few current examples of environmental regeneration of an urbanized coastal space. The mayor also referred to the urban development model of Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit and the commitment that has been made for decades to sustainability , the reduction of urbanizable land and the protection of areas of high natural value. This commitment, in addition to improving the quality of life and the local tourist offer, has been recognized with several national and international awards and prizes.
The group also visited Cap de la Barra, in L’Estartit, where they were received by biologist Boris Weitzmann , who, among other things, told them about the Natural Park’s guide courses that have been organized for six years and about the main characteristics of the Montgrí Natural Park, the Medes Islands and the Baix Ter.
