Pirates and Corsairs take over L'Estartit in a weekend full of cultural and recreational activities

Theatrical performances from last year's Pirates and Corsairs FairThe Pirates and Corsairs of the Medes Islands will once again take over L’Estartit from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 September at the traditional Pirates and Corsairs Fair . Organised by the Estació Nàutica-Illes Medes-AFOMTUR in collaboration with the Torroella de Montgrí Town Council and the EMD of L’Estartit , the event reaches its nineteenth edition with new features such as a theatrical night visit or the opening of an old seafaring tavern.

The event combines recreational and cultural activities of all kinds and for all types of audiences with the aim of disseminating an important part of the history of l’Estartit. The streets will once again be filled with crafts, theatrical and family shows, parades and parades, pirate performances, children’s workshops and guided tours of exhibitions among others.

Disembarkation and parades

Landing of the 2022 edition of the Pirates and Corsairs FairOn Friday 22nd the Pirates will disembark at La Platgeta again in what is one of the most spectacular activities of this fair. The disembarkation will take place at 9pm and will be followed by a Fire Run. This will leave from Plaça 1 d’Octubre and will travel along the Promenade to the height of the Freu. The other big event is the Naval Battle on Saturday at 6.30pm also at La Platgeta, where the Pirates will receive reinforcements in their attempt to conquer L’Estartit. Half an hour later, Els Pirat’s de les Medes, Retumbatuka, Costa Brava Djs and the Aixa boat will make a parade from Plaça 1 d’Octubre to the Parc de la Pineda. Sunday 24th will not be without a parade with the Aixa boat as the protagonist. It will start at 1pm and will make a route from Plaça 1 d’Octubre to the Promenade to the height of the Freu. Before, at 11 am and until the start of the parade, there will be a ‘photocall’ on the Aixa ship with pirate characters and an hour later, at 12 pm, a children’s show of Tales and Songs with País de Xauxa.

Family workshops and shows

To start warming up, there is a craft workshop at 5pm on both Wednesday and Thursday at the Mar de Llibres Library. A library that also organizes Story Time on Friday and Saturday at 5.30pm and 11am respectively. On both Saturday and Sunday at the Espai del Petit Pirata, the little ones can paint a pirate mask. A workshop that costs €3 and is located in a tent in Plaça de la Llevantina. Also for a fee (€4) is the pony ride organized by Mas Paguina next to the Tourist Office. Anyone who wants to learn how to tie pirate knots can do it on both Saturday and Sunday at 10am and 4pm in front of the Tourist Office.

Dramatized visits

Theatrical representation of the 2022 Pirates and Corsairs FairOne of the new features of this year’s Pirates and Corsairs Fair is the theatrical night tour that Excalibur Teatre offers on Saturday at 9 p.m. It is the ‘gamberra’ version of L’Estartit Pirata that the same company offers at a price of €2 both Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in various performances. Another notable new feature this year is the Can Bernat Museum, where visitors to L’Estartit will be able to experience what an old fishermen’s tavern from the early 20th century was like. The Fair will close with the final show ‘Sebastià el Conqueridor’ at 7 p.m. in Plaça de la Llevantina.

Exhibition on the origin of piracy

The history of piracy is ancient and this year the Fair’s exhibition will focus on its origins. The exhibition will open on Friday 22 at 6 pm in the EMD Conference Hall and can be visited on Friday afternoon and Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon. Coinciding with the Pirates and Corsairs Fair, visitors will have the option of getting to know the Meda Gran on a guided tour on Saturday and Sunday at various times and taking a boat and hiking trip on Saturday at 9 am. The guided tour that has been taking place all summer entitled “L’Estartit, land of fishermen. A seafaring past”, run by the Mediterranean Museum, with a departure at the L’Estartit Tourist Office, is also being maintained.

Blood donation, craft market and music

Taking advantage of the fact that L’Estartit will receive a lot of people, the Blood and Tissue Bank will put a bus on the Paseo Marítim on Sunday morning 24th so that anyone who wants to can donate blood. Throughout the weekend there will also be a craft market and on Friday and Saturday nights a concert: The first by Six in Town at 10.30pm in Plaça de la Llevantina, and the next day one by Rockola at 11pm in Sala Mariscal. Also on Saturday, at 8.30pm, Sunset Djs will have a musical session in La Pineda. Companies in the municipality also take advantage of Pirates and Corsairs to carry out activities such as outings with the Barca Núria and the Corsari Negre or a sailing christening at the CN Estartit.
