The City Council of Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit and the campsites in the municipality will strengthen their collaboration to increase the collection of organic waste generated in these establishments.

The council has been the beneficiary of a subsidy from the Waste Agency of Catalonia (ARC), within the project “Promotion of the selective collection of municipal waste”, within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which is funded by the European Union-Next Generation 2023. The purpose of this subsidy is to finance actions that contribute to the promotion of more efficient projects to improve the selective collection of the different fractions of municipal waste, from a circular economy perspective, to contribute to achieving more sustainable management and saving natural resources.

Promotion of organic collection, textile waste and used vegetable oils

The Torroella City Council has been awarded a grant of 52,905.44 euros to finance the actions it will carry out during 2024, which are basically focused on the selective collection of the organic fraction of campsites and the promotion of the selective collection of used vegetable oils and textile waste in campsites and citizens. The municipal will is to gradually achieve the objectives set by the current Waste Law and the European directives that urge municipalities to collect 50% of waste selectively and 15% for preparation for reuse by 2035, thus promoting the circular economy. Therefore, the final objective is to reduce the tons deposited in landfill, especially with regard to organic waste and thus reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the fight against climate change.

A communication campaign will be launched in the summer

On the other hand, the City Council will launch a communication and awareness campaign in the summer, lasting 2 years, aimed mainly at citizens, businesses, large generators, educational centers, tourist homes, etc. to promote selective collection and civic attitudes.
