The Pirates and Corsairs of the Medes Islands will once again take to the streets of L’Estartit with fire as the protagonist. On the weekend of September 20, 21 and 22, the Pirates and Corsairs Fair reaches its twentieth edition with a night of fire to open the event as one of the main novelties. Organized by the Estació Nàutica-Illes Medes-AFOMTUR in collaboration with the Torroella de Montgrí City Council and the EMD of L’Estartit , the event combines recreational and cultural activities of all kinds and for all types of audiences. It seeks to disseminate an important part of the history of L’Estartit in a playful way. The streets will once again be filled with crafts, theatrical and family shows, parades and parades, pirate performances, children’s workshops and guided tours among others.
The 20th Pirates and Corsairs Fair of l’Estartit will open and close with fire. The Pirates will take to the streets of l’Estartit on Friday 20 September with a firework parade at 9 pm from the Platgeta and to the Plaça de l’Església. The Corsari Negre will ’threaten’ L’Estartit from the sea with a pyrotechnic show and then Els Pirat’s del Foc , Els Pirat’s de les Medes , Retumbatuka , Els Voltors and the ship Aixa will have a firework parade and parade through the streets of the town. The traditional theatrical show to close the Fair, on Sunday 22 September, also changes format and location and includes fire as one of its main elements. Excalibur Teatre will bid farewell to the Fair from the end of the Platja, near Can Pau, at 8 pm.
Retumbatuka, the Pirat’s de les Medes and the Aixa Ship will not miss their annual appointment with the Pirates and Corsairs Fair. On Saturday 21 September and Sunday 22 September, at 7 pm, they will leave in a parade from Plaça 1 d’Octubre and on Sunday 22 September from 10 am to 1 pm children will be able to take photos for the price of one euro on the Aixa Ship ‘moored’ in Plaça 1 d’Octubre. On both Saturday 21 September and Sunday 22 September visitors will be able to participate in the activity ‘Where is Quimet?’ with Marta Gimeno. Saturday at 6 pm from Plaça The Beatles and Sunday at 11 am from Plaça 1 d’Octubre.
The Pirates and Corsairs Fair program is full of family activities. To get the engines going, on Wednesday, September 18 and Thursday, September 19, there will be a craft workshop at 5 p.m. at the Mar de Llibres Library . A library that also organizes Storytime on Friday, September 20 and Saturday, September 21 at 5:30 p.m. and 11 a.m. respectively. On Saturday, September 21 and Sunday, September 22, at the Espai del Petit Pirata, the little ones will be able to make a fabric case for back to school. A workshop that costs €5 and is located in a tent in Plaça de la Llevantina. With the same price, but with editions on Friday 20 September, Saturday 21 September and Sunday 22 September, from 10 am to 11 am and from 3 pm to 4 pm, Empordaníssim will offer a pirate scarf printing workshop at Carrer Santa Anna 44. For this workshop, prior reservations must be made at 678677704. Also for a fee at a price of 4 euros is the pony ride organized by Mas Paguina next to the Tourist Office on both Saturday 21 September and Sunday 22 September. Next to the ponies, on Saturday 21 September, La Sal d’Olot will organize a workshop from 11 am to 1 pm at a price of 3 euros. Anyone who wants to learn how to tie pirate knots can do so on Saturday 21 September and Sunday 22 September at 10 am, 11 am, 12 pm, 2 pm and 4 pm at the Club Nàutic l’Estartit. With a desire to raise environmental awareness, the Environment Department of the Torroella de Montgrí City Council is joining the Pirates and Corsairs Fair with ‘Pirates also recycle’. An information point with children’s games that will be located on the Promenade, next to the ponies, from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday 21 September.
Beyond the final theatrical performance of the Pirates and Corsairs Fair, the event is full of ‘performances’ and theatre. On both Saturday 21 September and Sunday 22 September from 11 am to 1 pm Excalibur Teatre will give the ‘l’Estartit Pirata’ visit from Plaça The Beatles, at a price of 2 euros. To take this visit, prior registration is required by calling 972750699. The same company will be in charge of the street entertainment on Saturday 21 September from 5.30 pm from Plaça de l’Església. It also repeats the night visit that premiered last year, but with a more ‘hooligan’ and spicy touch. This night tour will begin at 9pm in Plaça The Beatles, costs 2 euros and requires prior reservation by calling 972750699. In addition, the Can Bernat Museum will once again transport visitors to an old fishermen’s tavern from the early 20th century during the days of the Fair.
Piracy has inspired stories, legends, comics and music and all of this is included in this year’s exhibition. It is entitled ‘The darkest face of Pirates. Music, comics and series’ and covers the remarkable influence that the pirate theme had on rock in the 80s and 90s of the last century. The exhibition will open on Friday 22 at 5 pm in the EMD Auditorium and can be visited throughout the weekend. Linked to this theme, on Saturday at 11 pm there will be a Rockola concert in the Sala Mariscal.
Coinciding with the Pirates and Corsairs Fair, some lucky visitors will have the option of getting to know the Meda Gran in a guided tour for which all tickets have already been sold out. La Barca Núria has organized two trips to discover the Medes Islands and their surroundings. The first, on Saturday at 09.15 with Boris Weitzman , promoter of the Sèpia project , to discover the secrets of the Medes Islands marine reserve. It costs 35 euros for adults and 20 euros for children under 11 years old. The second will be on Tuesday 24 September, taking advantage of the fact that a good part of the visitors to L’Estartit are celebrating the Diada de la Mercè. In this case, the topic will be Artisanal Fishing in L’Estartit and will leave at 07.30 in the morning. Its prices are 45 euros for adults and 25 for children under eleven years old.
Lovers of pirate stories and adventures have an unbeatable opportunity to enjoy them aboard the Corsari Negre. On both Saturday 21 September and Sunday 22 September at 11 am Laura Asensio will explain ‘La Pirata Rata’. This activity costs 25 euros for adults, 18 euros for children between 4 and 11 years old and 3 euros for children under four years old. Those who prefer to be protagonists of adventures can participate on Saturday 21 September at 09:30 am in the Robinson Route. A boat ride plus hiking to look for a pirate treasure. Its price is 29 euros for adults and 24 for children under twelve years old.
Taking advantage of the fact that L’Estartit will receive a lot of people, the Blood and Tissue Bank will place a bus on the Passeig Marítim on Sunday morning 22nd so that anyone who wants to can donate blood. There will also be a craft market throughout the weekend.
