The typical tourist who visits Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit is Catalan or French, arrives by car and travels as a couple. This is one of the main conclusions of the 2023 tourism report which includes the main figures and data of the year in terms of employment, consultations at the Tourist Office, beach services, activities and communication. The 44,864 consultations attended to at the L’Estartit Tourist Office and the Torroella de Montgrí Tourist Information Point stand out. Figures 2.5% higher than those collected last year and which certify the post-pandemic recovery that was already visible in the previous season.
In L’Estartit, French tourists made the most inquiries with 14,556, followed by Catalans with 10,031, Spaniards with 4,265, Dutch with 1,630 and Germans with 1,453. In Spain, Catalan tourism aside, the most prominent inquiries were made by tourists from the Basque Country (28% of the total), Madrid (15% of the total), Aragon (13% of the total) and Navarra (12% of the total). Regarding the information requested, general questions about the destination represented 24% of the total. The most prominent requests were for information on walking and cycling excursions (8% of the total) and the Natural Park (6% of the total). Regarding the Tourist Information Point in Torroella de Montgrí, national tourism continued to make the most inquiries (58% of the total). Followed by French with 18% of queries and Dutch, with 5.10% of queries. Within the Spanish market, as in the case of l’Estartit, Basques, Madrid and Aragonese led the top-3. The most requested information was also, 48% of the cases, about general issues of the municipality.
Since the beginning of 2023, the Network of Tourist Offices of Catalonia has had a new tool for collecting inquiries, Infotourist, which is filled out through visitor surveys. Thanks to Infotourist, tourist offices have access to statistical data on the presence of visitors, their origin or their profile, among others. This past 2023, the L’Estartit Tourist Office collected a total of 374 surveys and the Torroella de Montgrí Tourist Information Point, 366. The majority of respondents, 312 of the total, traveled to the destination as a couple and 237 as a family, with the age group between 45 and 64 as the one that answered the most surveys and a clear majority of women, 459 of the total, in terms of participation in these surveys. The most used means of transport to come to Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit was the private vehicle with 572 responses in the surveys.
Tourist occupancy in 2023 was on average 55% between Easter and the summer months. Hotel occupancy was 65%, campsites 41% and tourist apartment rental agencies 59%. The month of August was the busiest with 84%, 67% and 93% respectively.
During 2023, the Tourism Department of the Torroella de Montgrí City Council carried out around sixty entertainment activities such as storytelling, outdoor cinema, family shows, concerts, workshops, sardanas or guided tours. Also around sixty sports activities on the beach such as Sunset Yoga, water walking, zumba, sound baths or paddle surfing. These had around 1,600 users.
The Tourism Area participated in fairs such as CMT Stuttgart , Fiets en Vandelbeurs Utrecht , BTravel Barcelona , Mercat del Ram Vic or Expovacaciones Bilbao with 1,938 units of information brochures delivered. In 2023, the L’Estartit Tourist Office commissioned the publication of 20,100 units of information material, of which 6,320 were delivered to companies in the sector.
One of the most outstanding novelties of this year in terms of tourist activities was the launch of the Educational and Tourist Project of the natural and fishing heritage of l’Estartit. A proposal of educational activities that published 500 stories in Catalan, almost 2,000 units of merchandising material and about 2000 units of informative brochures of Estar and Tit . The two cartoon characters that star in this project. The informative material is in Catalan, English, French and Spanish. Regarding the promotion in the media this past 2023, 3 digital advertising campaigns were carried out in Meta and Google Ads and sponsored content in specialized magazines such as Descobrir Catalunya, Ut Empordà Guia, Petit Futé and Cap Catalogne. The Tourism Area also held an Instagram draw consisting of a hotel night and activity to do in the low season with promising results. On the sidelines, an advertisement was aired on TV3 prior to Easter and several banners were paid for in publications aimed at children, French and Catalan.
Regarding social networks, X (formerly Twitter) ended the year with 2,178 followers (35 more than last year), Instagram 8,149 followers (735 more than last year), Facebook with 8,996 followers (487 more than last year) and TikTok with 156 followers (40 more than the previous year). The Communication Area also produced 16 videos in 2023 with 196,082 views and 178 subscriptions. Regarding the newsletter, there are currently 1,818 subscriptions to the Visit Estartit account and last year a total of 16 newsletters were made. Most of them are aimed at the sector with the most relevant information from the Tourism Area but also at potential tourists highlighting the main activities of the municipality.
2023 was a year of new developments on the beaches of Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit with new children’s games on the beach of l’Estartit and Montgó, the opening of the new Parc de la Pineda and the installation of new toilets in various areas of the beaches. The walkways and footbaths were also changed and new signage was installed. Regarding the lifeguard and assisted bathing service, there were 75 users of amphibious chairs, 330 assistance for jellyfish stings or minor injuries, 3,969 warnings to bathers or boats and 28 rescues.
