The Torroella de Montgrí City Council has presented the municipality’s new Strategic Tourism Plan , which establishes 21 actions to be developed over the next 2 years within seven strategic axes. This is a long-term vision agreed with the local tourism sector and is in line with the lines of work initiated with the Tourism Sustainability Plan that the municipality has been implementing in recent years.
The main objective of this new strategic plan is to reinforce the positioning of the Destination from a sustainable perspective, strengthen synergies, alliances and cooperation with the territory’s tourism agents and achieve consensual and participatory governance with the actors in the tourism sector, led by the Tourism Area of the Torroella de Montgrí City Council.
In line with this idea, a considerable number of the destination’s tourism agents, both from the public and private sectors, have participated in the development of this plan. An attempt has been made to consolidate the transversal work of regeneration of the destination that has been carried out for decades based on the valorization of the territory and the promotion of culture. The new planning updates the tourism diagnosis of the destination, which still suffers from strong seasonality; and reaffirms the long-term vision shared among the tourism agents working in the territory. This vision calls for diversifying the offer, carrying out sustainable management of resources, being benchmarks in nature tourism and having sustainability and landscape as flags, among others.
The plan is structured around seven work axes that aim to provide solutions to the main challenges and opportunities for improvement in the destination’s current tourism development. These seven work axes are: the construction of a complementary tourism governance model; the harmonization of the urban landscape of L’Estartit; the diversification of demand in accordance with the ‚visitors person‘ of the Catalan Tourism Agency; sustainable management of resources, mobility and reduction of CO₂ emissions; strengthening the human capacities of tourism professionals; innovation in the co-creation of tourist experiences; and Intelligence and data optimization for sustainable tourism. Each of these axes has one or more actions associated with it to be carried out in the next two years. For example, in the axis of harmonization of the destination’s urban landscape there is the creation of an urban landscape ordinance and prioritizing the native flora of the natural park in the plant and botanical ornamentation of the municipality. Thus, the seven axes add up to a total of 21 actions to be carried out until 2026 aligned at the same time with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. In order to monitor the plan, a monitoring committee will be created with representatives of the public and private sectors involved. The drafting of this plan has been coordinated by the company PAX # Genuine Tourism Advisors and is part of the sixth axis of the Tourism Sustainability Plan, that of business and citizen participation.
