The L’Estartit Tourist Office has incorporated three Braille maps with the itinerary through the historic center of the town. This acquisition is part of the Baix Empordà Accessibility Plan and the efforts of the Tourism Department of the Torroella de Montgrí City Council to promote inclusive tourism. The Braille map can be consulted at the Tourist Office and visitors who need it can take it with them while they make the route. This is a route adapted for people with reduced mobility and from now on also for blind people. The itinerary through the historic center of the town goes through the oldest streets of L’Estartit explaining its fishing and seafaring origins and portraying what life was like before the arrival of tourism. It is marked with different points of interest and panels, also available with an audio guide in Catalan, English, French and Spanish. The Braille maps, for the time being, are only available in Catalan.
The Tourism Department of the Torroella de Montgrí City Council has been working for several years to improve the accessibility and inclusiveness of the municipality’s tourist services. The Tourist Destination is part of the Baix Empordà Accessibility Plan and the Smart Tourist Destinations Network , where in the sustainability section it has a score of 59.8%, almost 19 points above the state average. In addition, within the framework of the Tourism Sustainability Plan, last year it commissioned a consultancy and audit service that is helping private tourist establishments to become more accessible environments. Work is also being done on training staff in the tourism sector through different courses since 2019 in sign language, tourist accessibility, easy reading or web accessibility. In the area of infrastructure, intense work has been done to improve the environment with accessibility measures at the Tourist Office, public toilets, walkways and beach railings, accessible bathrooms, accessible service billboards and the adaptation of tourist itineraries for people with reduced mobility and visual difficulties.
