Sehorses from l'Estartit: Citizen science, sustainable diving and marine conservation

The Espai Medes hosted the presentation of Seahorses from l’Estartit, an initiative that connects citizen science, recreational diving, and sustainable fishing to study and preserve two protected and little-known Mediterranean species: seahorses and pipefish.

The project reinforces Torroella de Montgrí and L’Estartit’s commitment to becoming a leading destination for sustainable marine tourism, combining the appeal of diving in the Medes Islands with environmental education and community involvement.

How did the project begin?

Seahorses from l’Estartit stems from the experience of the Projecte Sèpia (Cuttlefish Project), which promotes cuttlefish reproduction in L’Estartit using artificialt. During its implementation, it was discovered that these environments also serve as habitats for seahorses and pipefish. From there, a collaborative network was established between fisherman, local diving centres, and environmental conservation organisations.

Sustainable, active and participatory diving

The main goal is to create a responsible and collaborative diving site where divers not only enjoy a unique natural setting, but also become citizen scientists, collecting data on the presence and status of these species. This citizen science approach allows for long-term monitoring and meaningful contributions to their conservation.

During the project’s pilot phase this past year, 25 test dives were carried out to trial and refine the data collection methodology. The results were very positive: two seahorse species (Hippocampus hippocampus and H. guttulatus) and two species of pipefish were identified, including the uncommon Syngnathus acus, confirming the area’s high ecological value.

Local involvement and european support

The project is funded by the European Union through the Costa Brava Fisheries Local Action Group (GALP), with the collaboration of l’Estartit’s fisherman association.
