Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit have renewed the Green Destinations, Golden Award, improving the overall score obtained in the previous audit and achieving a rating of 8.8.
This distinction certifies and promotes sustainable tourist destinations at an international level according to environmental, socio-economic and cultural criteria. To obtain it, the municipality successfully passed an audit evaluating nearly one hundred sustainability criteria and indicators. Green Destinations inspectors carried out an on-site assessment following the international standards established by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
The indicators analyse aspects such as nature conservation, heritage, waste management, energy supply and the condition of tourism resources, among others.
The audit, valid for two years, highlights the strong commitment of Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit Town Council to sustainable tourism and values a mature governance model in which sustainability is integrated into different areas of municipal management.
In this regard, the report underlines public-private collaboration and an approach that combines economic development with environmental protection and cultural preservation.
The report also highlights the role of the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park as a key asset of the tourism model, together with the promotion of cultural heritage and the importance of local traditions and festivals.
According to the audit, these elements contribute to creating a diversified and resilient tourism offer.
Since 2019, Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit have been part of the Top 100 Destinations Sustainability Stories programme and have held the Green Destinations Golden Award.
