The beach is much more than sand and water: in reality, it’s a fantastic place full of life. Close to the water there live some plants, birds and invertebrates that have adapted through evolution to harsh environmental conditions. On the beach the ambience is dry, hot and salty. There is life in the water too: fishes and invertebrates that camouflage themselves and bury themselves in the sand.
Species that bury themselves in the sand are wedge clams and sole. Where the waves ruffle the seabed there are sea bass, gilthead bream, thicklip grey mullet and striped seabream, which scrape the seabed searching for invertebrates to eat. Further out to sea there grows a submarine plant called Neptune grass.
Rod fishing is permitted from the beach, always with a licence and respecting the established minimum fish sizes and timetables. The artisanal fishermen of L’Estartit implement a project of responsible fishing, environmental protection and respectful tourism. In summer cuttlefish tanks are placed in the water: they can be visited using snorkelling equipment.
