6. The Medes islands

The archipelago of the Medes Islands is formed by seven islets. Located less than a kilometre from the shore, they conceal a wonderful submerged paradise of extraordinary ecological value.

The Medes Islands are called Medallot, the Meda Gran, Meda Xica, Ferranelles, Tascó Gros, Tascó Petit and Carall Bernat. They are protected as an Integral Reserve of the Nature Park of the Montgrí, the Medes Islands and the Baix Ter. They are an important refuge for seabirds and it is prohibited to disembark on them without permission from the Nature Park authorities.

The submerged part is also protected as a partial marine reserve. It is one of the favourite spots in the Mediterranean for divers from all over the world.

On top of the Meda Gran there is a lighthouse that has operated since 1868 to warn vessels sailing at night. It is the only Catalan lighthouse located on an island, and it was inhabited by a succession of lighthouse keepers and their families until it was automated in 1982.

The islets are nesting places for birds like seagulls, cormorants, egrets, herons and even the very rare storm petrel.
