This year, the Sant Andreu Fair in Torroella de Montgrí celebrates its 630th edition, an event rich in tradition that unites agricultural exhibitions, commercial activities, and popular culture. Taking place from November 29th to December 1st, the fair offers a varied program, including livestock displays, equestrian events, and deeply rooted cultural traditions.
The fair, one of the oldest in Catalonia, serves as a reflection of Torroella de Montgrí’s identity, demonstrating the evolution of its traditions alongside its agricultural and commercial vibrancy.
Markets and animal exhibits at Espai Ter
The fair officially opens on Saturday, November 30th, at 11 a.m., with the inauguration of the main exhibition space at Espai Ter, the center for commercial and livestock activities throughout the historic center. Passeig de Catalunya and Passeig Vicenç Bou will host local markets, an agricultural machinery display, and a used vehicle market, as well as the monthly Món Empordà organic market.
Also next to the Espai Ter there will be the familiar zone with workshops and games.
Miron Bococi debuts in the equestrian zone
Near Espai Ter, visitors will enjoy horse breeds on display, farm animals, pony and carriage rides, and equestrian performances. New this year, Miron Bococi will present his renowned horse freedom training show on Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m. in the equestrian area.
The popular sheepdog trials
One of the fair’s main highlights is the Sheepdog Trials on Sunday, December 1st, at 10:30 a.m. in Espai Ter’s parking area. This event attracts shepherds and dogs from Catalonia, the Basque Country, and the Balearic Islands, and this year two female shepherds will participate in the contest for the first time. Gemma Serra, and Leyla Ortiz. Historical referee Gillian Howell will also participate in the competition. The previous champion, Majorcan Miquel Sastre with his dog Tronc, will compete again.
Showcasing popular culture at Sant Andreu
Popular culture will be front and center with the Dragon Parade on Saturday, November 30 th, at 7 p.m., followed by a parade on Sunday, December 1st, at 12 p.m., starting at Passeig de l’Església. Special guests include the Giants from Sant Feliu de Guíxols. A showcase of local organizations will also take place at Plaça de la Vila, providing visibility to the community’s associations.
The fair’s cultural program features the exhibit ‘La caça a l’entorn del Montgrí’ (Hunting Around Montgrí) at the Sant Antoni Chapel and the 23rd “Fira en el record,” this year centered on clergy, convents, and Religious Orders, with theatrical visits on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Closing events include a concert by the Cardonina Choir with the Móndeveus and Anselm Viola Choirs from Torroella de Montgrí on Sunday, December 1st, at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of Sant Genís.
An Invitation to Discover Torroella’s Charm
In addition to fairground activities, the fair is an opportunity to discover the charm of Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit. The Town Council provides information on open establishments during the fair, allowing visitors to explore local gastronomy and hospitality, as well as the natural and cultural surroundings of the Torroella de Montgrí – l’Estartit – Illes Medes destination.
