Torroella de Montgrí -L’Estartit-Medes Islands tourist destination has collected the Green Destinations Golden Award in Berlín. This award certifies the local government sustainable policies and promotes sustainable tourist destinations worldwide according to environmental, economic and cultural criteria.
Last January Green Destinations revealed that Torroella de Montgrí and L’Estartit passed successfully the Golden Award independent on-site audit which has one hundred-odd sustainability indicators. This indicates excellence in all fields of sustainable destination management such as nature and heritage conservation, waste management, energy and climate, according with international standards dictated by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
The award is a recognition for the destinations’ efforts to sustain the attractiveness of its tourism in the future. Not only visible, tangible aspects are measured, such as natural heritage, but also policy and management plans that take sustainable development principles into account.
The marketing director of Costa Brava Tourism patronage, Víctor Goita, collected the award in the name of Torroella de Montgrí City Council at an event celebrated this Wednesday at the International Tourism Fair – ITB Berlín.
Since 2019, Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit has been included in the Top 100 Destinations Sustainability Stories competition. The municipality achieved the Gold Award level for the first timen also in 2019.
About Green Destinations
The Green Destinations Award & Certification Program challenges municipalities, counties, regions and protected areas to promote responsible destination management on an ongoing and sustained basis and stimulate the tourism sector to implement environmental practices.
Participating destinations engage in a sustainability management system, with every 2 or 3 years an independent verification of performance and progress, and recommendations for improvements.
With support from regional partners and representatives, more than 120 destinations in 25 countries have already received Awards and Certification. Green Destinations Certification is accredited since 2018 by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
