Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit has renewed its commitment to the Network of Smart Tourist Destinations (DTI) by updating the diagnostic report prepared by Spanish Government in 2022. The objective is to improve the municipality’s tourism management. This update will allow the establishment of a new roadmap with specific measures to advance in key areas such as accessibility, sustainability, governance, and technological innovation.
Since August 2022, Torroella de Montgrí and l’Estartit have been part of the DTI network, and this is the first review conducted to assess the implementation of the proposed measures. As a result of this review process, a new diagnostic report will be generated, outlining the current state of the destination and the actions to be taken to continue improving in terms of tourism management.
Smart Tourist Destination Program
The Smart Tourist Destination program is a project promoted by the Spanish Government aimed at improving the competitiveness of tourist destinations and the quality of life for residents. To achieve this, the program focuses on five key areas: governance, innovation, technology, sustainability, and accessibility.
This initiativefacilitates the quick incorporation of innovations into tourist destinations. A Smart Tourist Destination is defined as an innovative tourist space, based on advanced technological infrastructure, ensuring the sustainable development of the area, accessibility for all visitors and residents, and an enhanced quality of experience for both tourists and residents.
The DTI model, based on a diagnostic methodology that includes 97 requirements and 261 indicators, enables the continuous improvement of destination management through recommendations and a monitoring system. This model has been recognized as a good practice by international organizations such as UN Tourism (formerly WTO), the European Commission, OECD, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
The DTI model, a reference at both national and international levels, is part of the Spanish Urban Agenda 2019 and represents a strong commitment to sustainability and innovation in tourism.
