The work of L’Estartit’s weather observer, Josep Pascual, has been selected by Green Destinations as one of the 100 best practices of 2023. Every year, the organization collects stories of sustainable tourism and best practices from destinations all over the world.
This year, Torroella de Montgrí – l’Estartit – Illes Medes presented the work of Josep Pascual under the title ‘Josep Pascual Massaguer, a key person to understand the climate crisis’. His task has been pointed out as an inspiring example for the tourism industry.
A life dedicated to the sea
Pascual has been analysing sea temperature for more than 50 years. He has created a database that is used for the international scientific community and has been recognized by the NASA. His observations demonstrate the effects of the climate change in the Mediterranean and have contributed to promote environmental policies in Torroella de Montgrí and L’Estartit.
Furthermore, Pascual has a very close relationship with the Tourist Office collaborating in different events, appearing on media and promoting Torroella de Montgrí and L’Estartit with his photos and videos.
This is not the first year that Torroella de Montgrí and L’Estartit have been recognized for their good practices and stories in terms of sustainability. Last year the city council received a similar mention for the program ‘The Natural Park at School’. An educational project promoted by the Natural Park of Montgrí les Illes Medes and Baix Ter where around 3,000 students from 9 different educational centers within the Natural Park took part.
