Since 2006, the Platja Gran of l’Estartit counts on an international Integrated Management System certification of touristic and environmental quality (SIG).
The project that allowed to implement the certifications started on June 2004. It consisted in a very ambitious and innovative initiative in Spain, since it stablished an integrated System of quality and environmental management, unifying 3 different reference standards in only one regulation: regarding environmental protection, the EMAS 761/2001 and the UNE-EN ISO 14001: 2004 have been applied, and in reference to tourist quality, the UNE-EN ISO 9001:2008 has been applied.
Thus, the three regulations have been unified in a unique system, fact that allowed to avoid duplicating efforts and be able to focus on a global perspective. By the same line, it is worth highlighting that the environmental management system ensures the preservation of the environment and the management of quality system that guarantees beach users’ satisfaction, working collectively with a permanent vision towards continuous improvement.
The Quality Plan of the beaches was developed in 3 phases:
Initial Environmental Assessment. The study, carried out between June and December 2004, allowed the identification of all the environmental incidences of the area to foster an integrated environmental strategy, being the environmental factor a key factor to the sustainable development.
During the year 2005, the design of an integrated management system was consolidated and it allowed to identify and orientate the management of the beaches towards good environmental practices and to offer services with a Standard of excellence to the users
During the first semester of 2006, the implementation, revision and certification of the management 0073ystem was carried out.
