Torroella de Montgrí
The name Torroella de Montgrí comes from the word Torroecella, which refers to an old tower of the old castle of Torroella, where the Palau Lo Mirador now stands.
The old castle appears in documents from as early as the 11th century. The town grew around it and the tower or cellar was built.
From 1272, the town became royal, and the castle kept changing. In 1385, it was first referred to as a “Viewpoint”, as its strategic location allowed views of the entire plain.
Kings such as Jaume I the Conqueror, Pere II the Great or Joan I the Hunter stayed in this castle. Joan I the Hunter slept there the night before his death, in the woods of Foixà, during a hunt.
