La Pineda: A Natural Haven Between Town and Wetlands
La Pineda is a green space located between the town of L’Estartit and the Ter Vell wetlands, offering a seamless connection between the village and nature. Situated along the seafront, it plays an important role in preserving the area’s natural landscape.
In front of La Pineda, there is a recovered dune, an essential ecosystem that helps preserve beach sand. Dunes act as a natural barrier against strong winds—which are becoming increasingly intense—and help mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Within La Pineda, you’ll find species like white pine and tamarisk, while the tall branches of these trees provide a home for birds, including woodpeckers and turtle doves.
Beyond its ecological benefits, La Pineda also has a positive impact on society, contributing to well-being and health. The trees generate oxygen, trap carbon dioxide, offer shade from the sun, and serve as a social gathering space during the warmer months.
The Pineda area and the recovered dune are examples of how, despite human activity, nature can be restored and protected when given the proper care and respect. A notable example of this recovery is the Polygonum robertii, a plant that is endangered and protected by law. Although it has disappeared from many parts of the Mediterranean coast, it still survives on the promenade of L’Estartit, serving as a symbol of resilience and conservation.
